Dear colleagues and friends
On behalf of the Scientific and Local Organizing Committees of the 34th annual meeting of the Nordic Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, I bid you welcome to our beautiful historical capital Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands from August 31th to September 3rd, 2017. The congress venue will be the beautiful Nordic House in central Tórshavn.
The Faroe Islands are a beautiful island archipelago situated between Iceland, Scotland and Norway in the middle of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Faroes were like Iceland settled by Norwegian vikings approx. 1000 yrs ago. The language is of Nordic origin and the country has its own exciting history and culture set in dramatic sceneries with unspoiled landscapes. Even if the Faroe Islands are a micro-nation with only approx. 50,000 inhabitants, the Faroes have large territorial waters, with large fish stocks and a very succesfull production of probably the best salmon in the world. The Faroe Islands have a very rich contemporary music and art scene thriving alongside the traditional Faroese chain dance and storytelling inspired by the dramatic nature and volatile climate.
The Faroe Islands also have a special history within the field of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases making the country an ideal location for a conference covering these more and more important scientific, diagnostic and clinical areas in a global health context. The world famous physiologist and pathologist Peter Ludvig Panum made his most famous observations in the Faroe Islands, describing measle epidemics and effects of the lack of Herd Immunity in the Faroese population. Another world famous physician was Niels Ryberg Finsen born in Tórshavn. He made landmark studies regarding light treatment of the invalidating skin tuberculosis; lupus vulgaris. This achievement gave him the Nobel Prize of Medicine in 1903. Other landmark studies within the natural history of tuberculosis and ornithosis were also conducted in the Faroe Islands during the last century.
We are looking very much forward to welcoming you to an exciting scientific NSCMID 2017 meeting in unspoiled and unbelievable Faroe Islands!
